The Boy in the Alley
Every alley in District 4 seems to have one — a child standing at its mouth, half in shadow, entirely unbothered by the chaos of wires and washing overhead. In this new woodcut, the first in a series growing out of my Discovering D4 project, that child stands at 240 Bến Vân Đồn, outside a house that belongs to my wife's family. Cut in a single layer and hand-pulled in an edition of 8, the print carries the alley's texture in full — cracked plaster, iron scrollwork, timber shutters — around a figure who represents nothing more, and nothing less, than childhood freedom itself.
