The Jade Emperor Pagoda - Chùa Ngọc Hoàng
This one has a very personal connection to my life in Vietnam. The temple sits on Mai Thị Lựu Street, just behind the very first home I had when I arrived in Ho Chi Minh City 14 years ago!
The temple was built around 1909 by the Cantonese Chinese community in Saigon, originally as a Taoist temple dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the supreme ruler of heaven in Taoist belief.
Step inside and the air is thick with incense smoke, curling past intricate woodcarvings and a roof crowded with elaborate tile work — the statues themselves are made from reinforced papier-mâché rather than stone, which is part of what gives the place its otherworldly, slightly theatrical feel.
Also known as Phước Hải Tự (Luck Sea Temple), it's a place where young couples come to pray for luck starting a family — a tradition my wife and I took part in ourselves at the beginning of our marriage. Visitors can also release pairs of turtles which is where the temple gets its nickname, the "Turtle Temple." It's a small, quiet ritual.
