A View Over the Water
Read left to right, this piece traces the full skyline of Saigon in one sweep. On the left, tubular houses stack up on top of each other like matchboxes, narrow and vertical, the way land here has always been taxed and built. Through the middle, along Võ Văn Kiệt, sit the low, one-up-one-down market houses with their steep slanted roofs — the old rhythm of the riverside. And on the right, the skyline takes over: towers pushing up and outward, the city still expanding into the sky even as the old rooftops hold their ground below.
It's the view from D4 looking across at D1 — three different eras of the city sitting shoulder to shoulder in a single frame, none of them finished with each other yet.
Cut entirely in black line on a single block, letting the density of the mark-making carry the contrast between old town and skyline.
Large scale woodcut, hand carved from a 120x80cm plywood block. Pictured is 1 of 2, slightly unique artist proofs in black ink and the first off the block! A limited edition of 8 variable colored prints are also available at the gallery.
