Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi — Hand-Burnished Woodcut Print
There is a particular hour in Hanoi when the city holds its breath. The motorbikes thin out, the street vendors pause, and Hoan Kiem Lake settles into something close to silence. This print captures exactly that moment — the view through a canopy of tropical trees, past dense undergrowth alive with botanical detail, toward the small island at the lake's heart where Tháp Rùa, the Turtle Tower, has stood since the late 19th century.
Built on a rocky islet with no bridge to shore, Tháp Rùa takes its name from the giant Hoàn Kiếm turtles — a now critically endangered freshwater species — that once surfaced in these waters. According to legend, Emperor Lê Lợi was gifted a magical sword by the Golden Turtle God, used to drive out Chinese invaders in the 15th century. Years later, a great turtle rose from the lake and reclaimed the sword for the divine realm. The lake has carried the name Hồ Hoàn Kiếm — Lake of the Restored Sword — ever since.
The composition places the viewer among the bankside vegetation, framing the tower across still water as though glimpsed by accident — a private discovery rather than a tourist landmark. The bold contrasts of relief printmaking suit the subject perfectly; dense carved foliage gives way to the pale stillness of the lake's surface, drawing the eye toward that solitary tower.
Hand drawn, carved, and printed from a single 30×40cm woodblock, this is a limited edition of just five prints — each hand-burnished, making every impression subtly unique.
